Breakfast tacos are a big thing in Texas. After finding a good one, normal people will happily eat it every day of the week (and not just for breakfast, either). We know naming the “best” of anything is a dangerous game. Nevertheless, we’re throwing down the gauntlet and highlighting what we think are the best breakfast tacos in San Marcos, Texas, and the surrounding area.

Personal Favorite Breakfast Tacos in San Marcos, Texas
El Taco Feliz

No frills and highly addictive
Let’s get the best out of the way first. El Taco Feliz food trailer is actually located in Martindale, a mere nine minutes from Pecan Park. In other words, you could hypothetically sleepwalk there.
These breakfast tacos are so cheap you might be skeptical, but that skepticism won’t last long. There can be a line to order on the weekend, but you can call in your order ahead of time. Or use the extra time to get to know the locals. Cash only.

Los Vega
This local hole in the wall is known for low prices, good service, superb salsa, and overflowing breakfast tacos. BYOB if you’d like a cerveza with your meal. 🍺
There isn’t a lot of seating, so expect a short wait if you go for Sunday brunch. Los Vega opens early (6:30 a.m. daily, except Sunday at 7 a.m.), but closes at 3 p.m. every day.

The Palm Cafe

The Palm Cafe is another local joint you shouldn’t judge by its cover. Everybody talks about the fresh, homemade tortillas. They’re a game-changer.
You know the drill: small place with limited seating, attentive service, low prices. Both your pocketbook and stomach will leave happy.
Closed early on Sunday (3 p.m.) and all day Monday.

Helen’s Casa Alde
Helen’s Casa Alde is located about 25 minutes north of Pecan Park in Buda, but it’s well worth the drive. This restaurant is housed in an historical hundred-year-old building, which used to be Buda’s General Store.

The Fattie at Helen’s Casa Alde, where breakfast is always served
Helen’s serves two-item tacos for $1.75 each and “famous tacos” that range from $2.20-2.90 each. The Fattie is a crowd favorite, filled with potato, egg, bacon, sausage, and cheese. Only Helen’s could fit that much goodness into one tortilla.

Other San Marcos Breakfast Tacos Everyone Raves About
Loli’s Cafe
In its guide to San Marcos, The Austinot blog raved,
“Talk tacos to nearly anyone who has spent time in San Marcos, and the common denominator is Loli’s. Best known for solid breakfast tacos, Loli’s offers lunch tacos, too. The service here is strictly drive-through. Drive up to this humble house and marvel at the efficient, time-proven skill shown, while adeptly taking orders and cranking out yummy tacos.”
Pro tip: when there’s a long line of cars, park and walk up to the window for quicker service. If you plan to order more than one of these breakfast tacos, you better make sure you’re hungry.
The hours here are the same every day: 5 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Herbert’s Taco Hut
Herbert’s Taco Hut is open late compared to some of the taquerias on this list, so you’ll tend to hear customers raving about lunch and dinner. But don’t miss the breakfast tacos, which are undoubtedly some of the best in San Marcos.
Seating is tight and service can be on the slower side. Take a breath, go in with accurate expectations, and get ready to add a new favorite restaurant to your list.

Rogelio’s Restaurant
Rogelio’s is locally owned and operated by the Nieto family, named after founder Rogelio Nieto. Rogelio immigrated from Mexico when he was 15 years old. He started at the bottom of Austin’s food industry, becoming manager at several restaurants over the span of 20 years before opening Rogelio’s. He has certainly earned the respect of the Central Texas community.
Doesn’t Rogelio’s sound like a local business you’d want to support?
